Bob DeLorenzo, known to his legion of friends as “Big D,” was closely associated with local athletics for more than 50 years. DeLorenzo had been associated with Polar Bear athletics as a high school player, assistant football coach, head football and wrestling coach, and later athletic director.

After a standout career at Fairmont Senior High School, which included a state wrestling title in 1959 during his senior season, he earned a football scholarship to West Virginia University. He was a starting guard on the Mountaineer team under coach Gene Corum in the 1962 and 1963 seasons.

Upon graduation from WVU, he came back and coached the Polar Bear football team, moving up from the assistant ranks to head coach in 1970. He served as athletic director from 1981-1997.

The Polar Bears’ Coach D is fondly remembered for his years on the sidelines and in the halls of the high school, touching many lives.DeLorenzo retired as Fairmont Senior High School’s athletic director in 1997, but always remained a strong fan of the school’s athletic teams.

In his memory, the DeLorenzo family has founded the BIG D SCHOLARSHIP, to be awarded each year to outstanding scholar athletes at Fairmont Senior High School that wish to continue their education at West Virginia University.
